Arcanum 21 in a destiny matrix, and the points that produce it
Twenty-one shows up in 43.8 per cent of the charts drawn from dates between 1900 and 2026, more often than any other number above 15 except 18. One inner point supplies a large share of that, and two points of the figure can never supply it at all.
Where a 21 comes from
Of the thirteen numbers the chart draws — four corners for the day, the month, the year and their total, four diagonals, four inner points and the centre — two are shut to a 21. The month corner holds the month and stops at 12. The centre cannot hold a 21 either: above 14 the centre is exactly twice the day-month-year total, which makes it even, and below that it is the result of a digit sum, which never exceeds 14. High odd numbers have no way in there at all.
The remaining eleven points can all show a 21, and one of them shows it often. The inner point the key calls Task takes only multiples of three, and 21 is the largest of those; it lands there for 11.8 per cent of dates. Next come the year corner at 6.3 per cent and the diagonal between the month and the year at 5 per cent.
Everywhere else the 21 has to be hit exactly, because reduction — adding the digits while a total is above 22 — never returns a number that large.
How 21 is read in the tradition
Schools that teach this method read 21 as scope: a wide field of view, travel, work that touches many places, a whole rather than a part. Some say completion, some say the world outside the family, some read it as arriving somewhere after a long approach. The words are chosen by teachers and they differ from teacher to teacher.
None of them follows from the number. A 21 is what appears when two figures on the chart happen to add to 21, and the addition is indifferent to who is doing it. These pages keep the two halves apart on purpose: the arithmetic can be checked by anyone, the vocabulary cannot be checked by anyone, and mixing them is how a sum starts to sound like a finding.
Two dates that show a 21, in different places
On 5 January 1978 the year gives 1 + 9 + 7 + 8 = 25, which is over the ceiling, so 2 + 5 = 7. The first three corners are 5, 1 and 7, and their total is 13, small enough to stand. Centre: 5 + 1 + 7 + 13 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8. The Task point adds the centre to the fourth corner: 8 + 13 = 21. It is the only 21 in that chart.
On 13 January 1965 the year adds to 1 + 9 + 6 + 5 = 21 on its own. The corners are 13, 1 and 21, totalling 35, which reduces: 3 + 5 = 8. Centre: 35 + 8 = 43, then 4 + 3 = 7. The diagonal from the day corner to the fourth corner is 13 + 8 = 21, the second one. That chart also carries a 22, on the diagonal between the month and the year: 1 + 21 = 22, left as it is because 22 is where the scale ends.
Two dates, two different routes, and neither of them is a special case.
Questions about 21 in the chart
- Can 21 appear twice in one chart?
- Yes, and it is not unusual. On 13 January 1965 the year corner is 21 and the diagonal running from the day corner to the fourth corner is 21 as well. Repeats happen because several points are built out of the same handful of figures.
- Why does the Task point hold 21 more often than 3?
- That point takes only multiples of three, and its value follows the fourth corner, which is a reduced total. Large totals are far more common than tiny ones, so 21 turns up there for 11.8 per cent of dates while 3 manages 5.5 per cent.
- Does a 21 mean a cycle has ended?
- The tradition often words it that way. The arithmetic says only that two numbers added to 21: it holds no notion of a cycle, no dates beyond the one entered, and no way to tell apart two people whose sums matched.
