Arcanum 14: the scarcest number in the middle of the range

Fourteen is harder to come by than any of its neighbours: nearly two birth dates in three produce no 14 at all, and one position on the chart reaches it so rarely that the cases can be counted individually. This page works out why that is, shows two dates in full, and then says what the tradition attaches to the number.

How scarce a 14 is, and where it can stand

Across the 46,386 dates from 1900 to 2026, a 14 appears somewhere on the chart for 35.4 per cent of them. Apart from 1 and 2 — which hardly any position on the figure can produce at all, and which turn up on under 12 per cent of dates each — no number between 1 and 22 is scarcer.

It can occupy eleven of the thirteen drawn positions. The month point cannot hold it, being the calendar month untouched and therefore capped at 12. The inner point labelled d1 cannot either, since that one is always a multiple of three.

Its usual home is the inner point beside the month, at 7.5 per cent of dates, then the diagonal between day and month at 5.75 per cent. The corner holding the total of day, month and year gets there on just 1.0 per cent — a total of exactly 14 at that corner is uncommon, and no reduction can supply one, because bringing that corner down by digit sum never returns anything above 13.

What the tradition reads into a 14

Schools teaching the method read the fourteenth arcanum as measure: two things combined in a workable proportion, a pace that can actually be held, the setting between too much and too little. Some word it as blending, some as patience, some as the steady middle of a range.

Like every reading here it is vocabulary — agreed on, taught, passed along — and it was not derived from the sums. The arithmetic decides which number lands where. It has nothing to say about whether the description attached to that number is apt for anyone.

The tradition also holds that the same number reads differently depending on the point it occupies, so a 14 at the Talents point is discussed differently from a 14 at the Health point. Those position names come from the schools too, and they are not identical between them.

Two dates worked through

9 May 1989. Day 9, month 5, year 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 27, then 2 + 7 = 9. The fourth corner is 9 + 5 + 9 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5, and the centre is 23 + 5 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10. Because the day and the year both give 9 and the month and the corner both give 5, the four diagonal points are the same pair added four times over: 14, 14, 14 and 14. No date produces more.

1 January 1949 shows the other extreme. Day 1, month 1, year 1 + 9 + 4 + 9 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5. The corner is 1 + 1 + 5 = 7, and the centre is 1 + 1 + 5 + 7 = 14 — already inside the range, so nothing is reduced.

That matters because 14 is the highest number the centre can reach by reduction at all. It still lands there on only 0.33 per cent of dates, 151 out of 46,386: 123 of those come down from a total of 59, and the remaining 28 start at 14 and stay.

Questions about the 14

Is a rare number more important than a common one?
Not in this method. Nothing in the procedure weights a number by how often it comes up, and the schools that teach it do not rank the 22 that way either. A 14 appears less often than a 6 for one reason only: fewer of the sums the chart makes happen to land on it.
Why do the four diagonal points sometimes all show the same number?
Because each diagonal is the sum of the two points beside it. When the day and the year come down to one value and the month and the fourth corner come down to another, the same two figures get added four times. 9 May 1989 is such a date — 9 and 5 in both pairs, and a 14 at all four.
Which years put a 14 at the year point?
Five of them in this range: 1904, 1913, 1922, 1931 and 1940. The year point needs the year’s four digits to total exactly 14, because a year total large enough to be reduced never climbs back above 10. After 1940 the next one is 2039.
