Arcanum 15 and the Task point
Fifteen stands somewhere on almost exactly half of all birth charts, and a single position accounts for most of that. The inner point the chart calls Task shows a 15 on close to a quarter of every date in a century and a quarter — the largest share any number holds in any position on the figure. Here is why, and what the tradition attaches to it.
The one position that makes 15 common
The point labelled Task is the centre added to the corner that holds the total of day, month and year. It behaves unlike anything else on the chart: it is always a multiple of three, so it shows 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 21 and nothing else — seven possible values out of the 22 the range allows.
Fifteen is the commonest of the seven. Across the 46,386 dates from 1900 to 2026 it stands there on 23.5 per cent, the largest share any one number holds in any one position anywhere on the chart.
The reason is that nothing can be reduced into a 15 at that point, so the two figures have to add to 15 exactly, and only three pairings manage it: a centre of 10 with a corner of 5, covering 10.1 per cent of dates; a centre of 7 with a corner of 8, a further 9.2 per cent; and a centre of 4 with a corner of 11, another 4.2 per cent.
The centre itself, by contrast, can never show a 15. It is one of six numbers — 1, 2, 15, 17, 19 and 21 — that no centre total in this range produces.
What the tradition reads into a 15
The fifteenth arcanum is read in this tradition as attachment: a pull that is hard to put down, a habit that stopped being a choice somewhere along the way, the thing a person keeps going back to. Schools word it as dependence, as being held, as a bargain that looked smaller when it was struck.
It is the reading most easily turned into an accusation, and that is worth saying out loud. The number came from adding up a date. It cannot know whether anyone has such a habit, what it might be, or whether it costs them anything, and no school teaching the method claims a route from the sums to that.
What the tradition does say is that the point matters as much as the number, so a 15 in one place is discussed differently from a 15 in another. Both halves of that are convention.
Three days in one month, three routes to the same 15
April 1981 makes the routes visible. The year gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 = 19, and the month gives 4. Only the day changes.
On the 9th: 9 + 4 + 19 = 32, brought down by digit sum to 3 + 2 = 5. The centre is 32 + 5 = 37, then 3 + 7 = 10. Task is 10 + 5 = 15.
On the 12th: 12 + 4 + 19 = 35, then 3 + 5 = 8. The centre is 35 + 8 = 43, then 4 + 3 = 7. Task is 7 + 8 = 15.
On the 6th: 6 + 4 + 19 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11. The centre is 29 + 11 = 40, then 4 + 0 = 4. Task is 4 + 11 = 15.
Three days, three different centres, three different corners, one identical Task number. That is the shape of the whole method in miniature: a great many inputs feeding a very short list of outputs, which is also the reason the range stops at 22.
Questions about the 15
- Why does the Task point only ever show seven numbers?
- Because of the way it is built. It adds the centre to the corner holding the day, month and year total — and the centre is itself derived from that same corner, so the two stay locked together. Every total the pair can make is a multiple of three, which leaves 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21.
- Can a 15 appear in the centre of the chart?
- No. The centre total either sits at 22 or below and is left alone, or it is brought down by adding its digits, and neither route lands on 15 for any date in this range. A calculator that shows a 15 in the centre is applying a different reduction rule from the one described here.
- Does a 15 in two places count for more than a 15 in one?
- Nothing in the arithmetic says so. Around 15 dates in every 100 carry a 15 at two points or more, usually the Task point plus one other, and schools disagree about whether repetition is read as emphasis. The repeat happens because the same few figures are being reused, not because anything accumulated.
